You pretty much get what you pay for regarding rifle barrels. It takes
more time to make the accurate ones.

Krieger barrel blanks go for about $250. Obermeyer, Hart and Medesha ones
go for a bit less. These are the best ones made in the USA. All are
lapped to exact bore/groove dimensions.

Next in line are Shilen and Schneider which go for about $225. Excellent
barrels but they only last half as long as the above barrels. These are
also lapped to exact bore/groove dimensions.

On down the list is Douglas which go for about $130 (?) or thereabouts.
These are average quality barrels that vary quite a bit in bore/groove
diameters between barrels. You may need to get 10 of them, fit them, then
find out what each one does for accuracy. Preimum grade ones are somewhat
better than standard ones. They're all airgaged to measure groove
diameter uniformity; the better ones are called Preimum. None are lapped
to bore/groove uniformity

And then there's the cheap ones that are not worth much if accuracy is
important.

Order the barrel profiled like you want. Once you've got the blank, it'll
have to be shanked, chambered and crowned. Do not have a button rifled
barrel blank turned down and profiled; it will have different bore and
groove diameters afterwords and won't be as accurate.

# I have been reading several of the discussions about barrels, and
# haven't
# seen Douglas mentioned. I do see their ad's regularly, and wonder how
# they stack up. Comments?

Douglas barrels are very good mass produced barrels but don't usually
compare with the good match grade stainless barrels made but people like
Hart, Schneider, and Lilja.

For a hunting type rifle Douglas barrels will usually shoot better than
the person doing the shooting.
