RE: M1911 and the need for special disassembly tools.
Tools?? We don' need no steenkin' tools... :-)
How many people know that John M. Browning, in his infinite wisdom and
cageyness, automatically provided the only tool kit you need for complete
1911 disassembly when you bought or were issued your 1911??
The safety is used to push out the mainspring housing retainer pin, the
firing pin is used in conjunction with the safety to remove the mainspring cap
retaining pin and the tab on the sear spring leg of the sear spring is used to
push out the hammer and sear pins as well as the screwdriver needed to
remove the magazine release assembly. The edge of the sear spring is used on
the grip screws and bushings. The sear pin is used to get the firing pin
retainer/firing pin out of the slide and the flared end works good to help cam
the extractor out of its groove.
So as long as you have the gun, you don't really need to carry a tool box
around with you... :-)
