There is another scope that can survive it as well. I have a Hakko on a
.50 rifle. The scope has experienced about 250 rounds and it is still
in one piece ;). The rifle will not accelerate as hard as a McMillan,
though. It weighs somewhat more than a M87.

After gettin all excited about using air rifle scopes on .50 cals I 
decided to check with Dick Thomas at Premier Reticles.  Dick knows more 
about scopes and .50s than anyone else I know. Premier Reticles installs 
custom reticles and target turrets in Leupold scopes without voiding 
your warranty and has been boosting our Mark IVs up to 24 and 32 power 
for years.

In Dick's words, "don't waist your money it will not work".  Dick 
explained that the EFR (air rifle) scopes have modified objective 
assemblies but the real problem comes in the power change assembly.  The 
erector lenses have a nylon bushing that is moved up and down a helical 
cam track, under the recoil of the .50 this bushing gets all messed up 
and the lenses don't track like they are supposed to.  The EFR scopes 
have the same power change assembly as the reqular scopes.

DICK SAID THAT THE ONLY SCOPE HE HAS NEVER HAD ANY COMPLAINTS WITH WHEN 
USED ON THE .50 IS THE MARK IV.

Good idea but it looks like I'll stay with my Mark IV.
